Piran is without a doubt one of the most beautiful coastal towns in Slovenia. This charming town on the Adriatic Sea is known for its narrow streets, colorful houses, and Venetian architecture. The compact center is perfect for exploring on foot. As you wander through winding alleys, you’ll arrive at lively squares and constantly have views of the azure-blue sea. A visit to Piran feels like stepping back in time, while the Mediterranean atmosphere brings it vibrantly to life. From cozy terraces to the impressive city walls, Piran is a place where culture, history, and relaxation come together. Curious about what to do in Piran? Here are the best sights and tips!
Piran is car-free – parking is outside the city
Piran is largely car-free, which adds to the town’s charm and peaceful atmosphere. Most visitors park their cars in nearby villages such as Portorož or Lucija. We parked at this parking lot. From there, buses run every few minutes to Piran. Keep in mind that you often need cash to pay for the bus. It drops you off right in the center, near Tartini Square, so you can walk straight into town.
Once in Piran, the best way to explore is on foot. The narrow streets and many stairways make biking almost impossible. The center is compact and easy to navigate, so you can see a lot in a short time and discover hidden corners along the way.

Things to do in Piran
Piran is a small town, and most people spend one or two days exploring the highlights and soaking up the relaxed atmosphere.
Beaches and swimming spots in Piran
Although Slovenia has only a short coastline, you’ll find several small beaches worth visiting around Piran. One of the most beautiful places to swim is Fiesa Beach. This beach is just a 15-minute walk from Piran’s historic center and forms a peaceful bay surrounded by green hills and a small freshwater lake.
If you’d rather stay in the heart of the action, this swimming spot on the promenade is a great choice. This city “beach” of rocks and concrete sits right next to the famous Tartini Square and Hotel Piran. It’s definitely the busiest spot in town, but the lively atmosphere makes it fun. From the concrete platform, you can jump straight into the sea — perfect for a quick dip or sunbathing by the water.
Tip: Bring water shoes or sandals — the stones in the sea can be slippery.

Enjoy cocktails at Barbara Piran Beach
Barbara Piran Beach is the perfect spot for a relaxing day by the sea. You can rent a lounge chair, soak up the sun, and take a refreshing swim in between. With a cocktail or another drink in hand and views of the Adriatic Sea, you’ll experience the ultimate vacation vibe — just a short walk from Piran’s old town. If you’d like to stay overnight, check out Barbara Piran Beach Hotel.
Visit the centuries-old St. George’s Church
A stroll through Piran’s narrow, atmospheric streets takes you up to St. George’s Church. Built in 1608 in Baroque and Renaissance style, the church is made entirely of white limestone, which contrasts beautifully with the blue of the Adriatic Sea. From Tartini Square, it’s about a 10–15 minute walk uphill to the church, which sits on a hill 50 meters (164 feet) above the city. The view is spectacular: you can see the square, Piran’s red rooftops, and the vast sea.
The church was clearly inspired by St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, with a standalone bell tower proudly beside it. Especially at sunset, this is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in town. The resemblance to Venice’s St. Mark’s Basilica is no coincidence — Piran was ruled by Venice for centuries, and the 1608 bell tower still stands as proof of that history.
Walk along Piran’s city walls
One of the best ways to see Piran from above is from its old city wall. This medieval wall was built to protect the town, but today you can walk along it and enjoy panoramic views. From the towers and walkways, you’ll get a stunning look over Tartini Square, the red rooftops, and the Adriatic Sea. On a clear day, you can even see the Italian coast.
The section of the wall open to visitors is on the east side of Piran, at this location. Admission is a few dollars, and you can stay as long as you like. The walkway isn’t very long, but it’s one of the best spots to watch the sunset.
Soak up the atmosphere at Tartini Square
Tartini Square is the beating heart of Piran and without doubt one of the town’s most beautiful spots. The square exudes elegance with its gleaming white marble tiles, surrounded by colorful buildings with Venetian influences. There’s always something happening here — locals and travelers stroll along the terraces, children play in the open space, and street musicians often add to the atmosphere. Whether you sit down for a drink or simply wander around, Tartini Square invites you to linger a while.
Fun fact: This square was once an inner harbor. Boats used to sail right into the city here until the area was later filled in and transformed into the square you see today. So when you walk here, you’re literally stepping on a piece of history that used to be underwater.

The promenade and lighthouse
Piran’s promenade winds along the Adriatic Sea and is the perfect place for a leisurely walk. As you look out over the turquoise water and colorful houses, you’ll pass cozy cafés and small boutiques. Sunbathers relax by the shore, kids play by the water, and everywhere you see people enjoying ice cream.
Walk all the way to the end, and you’ll reach Piranski Svetilnik, the old lighthouse. It proudly marks the tip of the peninsula — a striking landmark and a perfect spot to pause, breathe in the sea air, and take in the sweeping views of the coast.
Find peace at the Minorite Monastery
Just outside Piran’s busy center, the Minorite Monastery is tucked away among narrow streets. Built in the 14th century, it still breathes the peace and history of that era. If the doors are open, step inside to admire the serene cloister. It’s a short stop, but a beautiful and tranquil break during your visit to Piran.
