In Ljubljana, you’ll dive into a world of charming streets, historic buildings, and creative hotspots. Slovenia’s capital may be small, but it’s bursting with energy. As you stroll along the green banks of the Ljubljanica River, you’ll discover colorful markets, cozy cafés, and unexpected street art around every corner. Above the city, the castle towers proudly, while down below, daily life unfolds across lively squares filled with locals and travelers. Ljubljana is compact enough to explore entirely on foot, yet big enough to keep surprising you at every turn. Curious about the best things to do in Ljubljana? Below, we share all our favorite tips for the top sights and activities in this vibrant city.
How Does Transportation Work in Ljubljana?
Ljubljana is small, so it doesn’t have a metro or tram system like many other European capitals. Everything in the city center can easily be explored on foot. Don’t feel like walking? You’ll find plenty of shared bikes and electric scooters for rent through apps like Bolt. For longer distances, simply hop on a bus — tickets can be purchased at kiosks or ticket machines for just a few dollars. Taxis and Ubers are also affordable options if you need a ride back to your hotel late at night.

Things to Do in Ljubljana
There’s plenty to see and do in Ljubljana to keep you entertained for one or two days. Here are the 11 best things to do!
Soak Up the Local Vibe at Ljubljana Central Market
To truly experience the spirit of Ljubljana, head straight to Central Market. It’s all about tasting, browsing, and people-watching. You’ll find both an indoor market hall and a large open-air section in the square. Inside, stalls are filled with cheeses, cured meats, and fresh bread, while outside you’ll see bursts of color from the fruit, vegetable, and flower stands. The market is open Monday through Saturday, and mornings are the best time to visit, when locals flock here to shop for their weekly groceries.
A Must-Do: Explore Ljubljana by Bike
One of the most fun ways to get to know the capital is by joining the Ljubljana Highlights Bike Tour. Together with a local guide and a small group, you’ll spend a few hours discovering the city’s most beautiful and interesting spots. You’ll cycle along the banks of the Ljubljanica River, through the car-free Old Town, and at the base of Ljubljana Castle. There are plenty of stops along the way where your guide shares stories about the city’s history, culture, and hidden gems. The best part? You’ll cover much more ground than on foot, without feeling rushed. Group sizes are small, so it feels personal and relaxed.

Visit Ljubljana Castle (Ljubljanski Grad)
Ljubljana Castle, or Ljubljanski Grad, rises high above the city and can be seen from almost anywhere. Originally built in the 11th century and later fortified with towers and walls, the castle has served as a fortress, prison, and military post over the centuries. Today, it’s a cultural hub featuring a museum, a wine bar, and, of course, panoramic views from the tower. At sunset, it’s arguably the most magical spot in town.
From the city center, it’s an easy 10- to 20-minute walk uphill, for example via the Študentovska pot trail. Not in the mood for a climb? Hop on the funicular to the castle — the ride itself offers fantastic views of the city below.
Take a Day Trip to the Postojna Caves and Predjama Castle
Think Slovenia’s beauty is only above ground? Wait until you visit the Postojna Caves! Located about an hour’s drive from Ljubljana, this world-famous cave system stretches for 24 kilometers (15 miles), though visitors explore a 3.5- to 5-kilometer (2.2–3.1-mile) section. Part of the journey is done on foot, while a small train takes you deep into the mysterious underground world. Inside, you’ll find breathtaking stalactites and stalagmites that took millions of years to form — a landscape that feels almost otherworldly.
Complete your day trip with a visit to Predjama Castle, a fairytale-like fortress built right into a massive cliffside. For a seamless experience, join this guided combo tour. You’ll travel with a small group and an expert guide who brings the history and legends of both sites to life.
Every Friday: Taste the World at Odprta Kuhna
Every Friday, the square next to Ljubljana’s Central Market transforms into a giant open-air food festival. At Odprta Kuhna, you can sample street food from around the world, as well as local Slovenian dishes and creative bites from well-known chefs. From grilled specialties to sweet desserts, and from craft beer to local wines — there’s something here for everyone!
Good to know: Odprta Kuhna usually runs from the end of March through October. It’s open from around 10 a.m. until late in the evening, so you can drop by any time of day.
Walk Across the Famous Dragon Bridge
The Dragon Bridge (Zmajski Most) is one of Ljubljana’s most iconic landmarks. It sits right in the heart of the city, connecting the Old Town with the Trnovo district. What makes it so special are the four large green dragon statues guarding each corner of the bridge. According to legend, the Greek hero Jason once slew a dragon here — and since then, the dragon has become the symbol of the city.
Built around 1900, the bridge was considered an architectural marvel at the time. Today, it’s a photogenic spot that every visitor stops to admire. Whether you’re into legends or architecture, this is one Ljubljana sight you shouldn’t miss.

Wander Through the Vibrant Trubarjeva Street
Cross the Dragon Bridge and you’ll find yourself on Trubarjeva Street — a lively mix of small boutiques, colorful murals, and cozy cafés. Because it’s popular with students, you can grab a tasty meal here for just a few dollars. One of our favorites is Abi Falafel, where you can enjoy a delicious falafel wrap for a great price. Trubarjeva Street has a more alternative, laid-back vibe compared to the classical city center, which makes it extra fun to explore on foot.
Visit Metelkova: Ljubljana’s Alternative Art Hub
Walk a bit farther from Trubarjeva Street, and you’ll reach Metelkova — a former military complex that’s now the creative heart of Ljubljana. Think colorful graffiti, experimental art, and an edgy, underground vibe. During the day, you can wander through the art-covered buildings and galleries, but at night, the area truly comes alive. Bars, music venues, and clubs open their doors with live concerts, parties, and even comedy shows. Weekends are especially lively, and there’s almost always something happening. Check Metelkova’s event calendar beforehand to see what’s on.

Take a Day Trip to Lake Bled
If you’re visiting Ljubljana as a city trip and not traveling around Slovenia, it’s absolutely worth taking a day trip to Lake Bled. This stunning lake is surrounded by mountains and forests, with the iconic island and the Church of the Assumption in the middle. You can rent a rowboat or take a traditional pletna boat to the island, go kayaking or paddleboarding, or simply relax along the peaceful shoreline. In summer, weekend markets featuring local products, handmade jewelry, and art add an extra dose of charm.
Since Lake Bled is only 55 kilometers (34 miles) from Ljubljana, it’s ideal for a day trip. The easiest way to get there is by public transport. The bus to Lake Bled takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. Curious what else there is to do? Check out all our things to do in Lake Bled.
Combination Day Tour: Want to see even more of Slovenia’s highlights? Then this combination day tour is perfect! In one day, you’ll visit Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj, and the stunning Savica Waterfall. You’ll travel in a small group with an enthusiastic guide who shares fascinating stories about each location. The full-day tour lasts about eight hours — a great option during a city trip to Ljubljana!

Walk Across the Iconic Triple Bridge (Tromostovje)
In the very heart of Ljubljana, you’ll find Tromostovje — the city’s famous Triple Bridge. The first wooden bridge here dates back to 1280, but the current version was designed by the renowned Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik in the early 20th century. He transformed it into a creative architectural feature by adding two pedestrian bridges alongside the original stone one. From the bridge, you’ll enjoy beautiful views of the river and the colorful houses along the banks, framed by classic lamps and stairways leading down to the water.

Visit the Historic Franciscan Monastery
Right on Prešeren Square, one building immediately catches your eye: the Franciscan Monastery with its striking pink façade. The monastery dates back to 1233 and is full of history. Inside, you’ll find colorful frescoes, marble details, and an impressive library filled with centuries-old manuscripts. The monastery sits right next to the famous Triple Bridge, so it’s hard to miss. While the square outside buzzes with people and café terraces, stepping inside feels like entering a peaceful, almost sacred space.
