Himarë surprises every traveler with its perfect mix of idyllic beaches, ancient castles, cozy lunch spots, and adventurous activities. This charming coastal town on the Albanian Riviera feels smaller and quieter than other southern beach destinations like Sarandë and Ksamil. That makes it the ideal place for anyone looking for an authentic vibe and a nice balance between relaxation and discovery. Whether you’re here to swim in secluded bays, hike past centuries-old ruins, or simply soak up the sun with a cocktail in hand, Himarë has it all! Read on to discover the best beaches, great restaurants, and fun things to do in Himarë.
Sidenote: Some of the places and activities in this guide overlap with those in our article about Dhërmi. That’s because Himarë and Dhërmi are close to each other and both make great bases for exploring this region.
Things to Do in Himarë
At first glance, Himarë might seem like a quiet seaside village, but there’s a surprising amount to discover in the area. Here are the 8 best things to do in Himarë!
Watch the Sunset From Himara Castle
Just a 10-minute drive from the center, perched on a hilltop, you’ll find Himara Castle. Originally dating back to antiquity, it was expanded over the centuries by the Byzantines and Ottomans. Today it’s largely in ruins, but that’s exactly what gives this place such a mysterious charm. What makes it extra special is the phenomenal view—you can see the sea, the town, and the surrounding mountains.
You can wander through old stone houses (some still inhabited), crumbling walls, and small churches like Kisha e Shën Sergjit dhe Bakut. Here and there you’ll find little lookout points with views of the Ionian Sea. Since Himara Castle isn’t overly touristy, you’ll often have the place almost to yourself. Be sure to come at sunset, when both the castle and the views are at their best.
Hike to Filikuri Beach, One of Albania’s Most Beautiful Beaches
Explore the Mountain Village of Dhërmi
Dhërmi is one of the most charming towns on the Albanian Riviera. Perched on a hillside, it’s filled with white limestone houses with red roofs and narrow streets. One highlight is St. Mary Monastery, an ancient monastery above the village offering serene views of the coastline. From the old town, it’s about a 10- to 15-minute walk.
From the center, a winding road takes you in about 10 minutes down to Dhërmi Beach, a long pebble beach with turquoise water. The vibe here is totally different from the village—you’ll find plenty of beach clubs and restaurants, perfect for an afternoon by the sea. Want to know more? Our full guide to Dhërmi covers the best beaches, day trips, and restaurants.
Walk to Gjipe Beach
Gjipe Beach is one of Albania’s most famous beaches. Its dramatic setting is what makes it so special—tucked between steep cliffs at the end of Gjipe Canyon. The high rock walls, turquoise water, and laid-back vibe make this a fantastic spot for a day on the coast.
The remote location means getting there takes some effort. From Himarë, drive toward the Gjipe Beach parking lot, then continue on foot along an unpaved track. The walk takes about 30 to 40 minutes along a rocky path with incredible sea views. If you have a 4×4, you can drive all the way down. On the beach, there are a few simple restaurants for lunch or a cold drink.
Tip: You can also visit Gjipe Beach on this fun boat tour from Himarë, which stops at hidden beaches, sea caves, and dramatic cliffs. Highlights include Turtle’s Cave, Crystal Beach, and of course Gjipe Beach. You’ll have time to swim, snorkel, or simply enjoy the views from the water.
Swim in the Crystal-Clear Waters of Aquarium Beach
If you’d rather escape the crowds, Aquarium Beach—also called Gjiri i Akuariumit—is a hidden gem. This remote cove is surrounded by rocks and named for its clear waters and colorful marine life. The road to get here is unpaved and bumpy, but the beach is worth it.
Unwind at Kiço Meniko Himarë Beach Club
Tucked away in a lesser-known bay, Kiço Meniko Beach Club is often blissfully quiet. Set between the rocks with a terrace overlooking the turquoise sea, it’s the perfect spot for swimming, sunbathing, grabbing a bite, or just relaxing.
Driving here? Don’t go all the way down—there’s no parking and turning is tricky. Instead, park near Mihalis Apartments and walk about 10 minutes to the beach club.
Visit Porto Palermo Castle
About 20 minutes south of Himarë, you’ll find Porto Palermo Castle, an impressive fortress built on a narrow peninsula in the Ionian Sea. It was commissioned in the early 19th century by Ali Pasha of Tepelena, a powerful Ottoman ruler of Albania and Greece. He built several fortresses to protect his domain, but Porto Palermo Castle is one of the best preserved.
Inside the walls, you’ll find dark corridors, old guard rooms, storage cellars, and even a small chapel. Climb to the roof for sweeping views of Porto Palermo Bay, the mountains, and the Ionian Sea.
Soak Up the Atmosphere at Himara Beach
Himara Beach—also called Plazhi i Himarës—is the town’s main beach, right along the promenade. Here you’ll find plenty of restaurants, cafés, and sunbeds. The calm, shallow water makes it a great place to spend an afternoon.
Tip: Find Himara Beach too crowded? Head to Livadi Beach, just north of Himarë. This long pebble beach has plenty of space, even in peak season. Be sure to grab a bite at Tonea’s All Day Brunch & Café—a relaxed spot serving tasty sandwiches, salads, and pancakes.
